1. David Bordwell commented memorably on this scene in his book on Ozu. Although many critics don't care for the two films Ozu made during this (pre-Late Spring) period — the other is "A Hen in the Wind" — Bordwell writes somewhere that if he had directed this film and nothing else, Ozu would still have been one of the greatest directors who ever lived.
