The humanities are really all about
what’s it like to be a human being and the archaeology of reading is a four-
year project to transcribe, digitize, and make searchable the marginalia, the
Renaissance marginal notes and manuscript the people left while they
were reading books shortly after printing was itself
invented. So our team selected about three dozen books that are densely
annotated by two of the most fascinating figures of the Elizabethan period. One of
the things that digital technology does is allow us to take scattered
collections of unique research materials and bring them all into one place to
make research possible. If anything, this kind of research demonstrates just how
relevant technology is to the humanities and how relevant the humanities is to
technology.
