[RUSSEL] Billie Eilish gives her take on recreational
drug use with a new self-directed visual for “xanny.” [RUSSEL] “xanny” is the sixth official
video from Billie’s breakout album, ‘When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?’ It features her singing as cigarettes are
put out on her face. [RUSSEL] The song was written after a night
of seeing her friends party a little too hard – and the lyrics find her questioning the
popularity of irresponsible drug use. BILLIE: Just watching my friends become completely
not who they were. Watching their personalities crumple up
and fall. [RUSSEL] The title is a reference to the prescription
drug, Xanax, used for managing anxiety. It’s also become popular for recreational
use, and has shown up in plenty of hip-hop songs. [RUSSEL] Back on “Xanny,” the track also
represents her sadness around the passing of her friend, rapper XXXtentacion. She wrote the tracks days after his murder
and her feelings at that time seem to appear in the song’s uneasy vibe. BILLE: It was really hard. It was especially hard to record that song
because I was really… FINNEAS: Caught up about him. BILLIE: Yeah, I was really emotional about
it. [RUSSEL] The song also touches on Billie’s
dislike for smoking. BILLIE: Kissing someone who tastes like an
ashtray sucks. And it’s not attractive, bro. It’s just not. [RUSSEL] But the jazz-inspired song also emulates
the sound of smoke. BILLIE: I just wanted it to sound the way
that it feels to just breathe in recycled breath. Recycled poisonous breath, I may add. [RUSSEL] Finally, Billie asserts that she
can’t keep friends who abuse drugs with no regard for their lives, while others die
from circumstances beyond their control. And she specifically name-checks a hipster
Southern California town. [RUSSEL] If you’d like to learn more about

  1. I hate cigarette too you know, my dad used to smoke and i hated the smell, i dont just hate the smell i hate it how it almost cost my dad's life on it.

  2. Great message. At least there some young artists not completely pushing the NWO agenda. But I'm pretty sure she's bisexual and also a leftist so.. you know she wouldn't be this big if she didn't submit in some way.

  3. as someone whose ACTUALLY PRESCRIBED xanax I literally couldn't help but take the song in a rude way. just that line when she says she doesnt need a xanny to feel better I low key feel shamed lol

  4. I mean finally a popular person who influences younger crowds speaks out. Its scary how many 15 year olds are willing to get fucked on prescriptions because they hear about it all day long and they think they are so depressed. Life keeps getting worse as you age so really you should just enjoy being young.

  5. Let’s just divide ourselves already in every way shape and form… especially from those we deemed toxic. Let’s not help those by actually helping but separating ourselves from them because then, they’ll be alone and won’t need drugs anymore… right?

  6. Where are the retarded Christians, who keep saying that Billie made a deal with the devil? This song is a statement against drugs, and "parties." If she were from the devil, she would be encouraging, not making young people aware. You stupid Christians. (that many of you are drug dealers, pedophiles or worse and feel entitled to say these nasty things to a teenager. Disgusting)

  8. but…

coke and xanax are completely different drugs in different categories of drugs and they have completely different effects

  9. I personally think the music video is supposed to demonstrate the extreme normalisation of drugs. A blank wall, a blank bench, a blank outfit and blank hair. It’s everywhere. It’s anywhere. It’s anyone. Any normal place, any normal person. It effects all of us, whether you’re the one smoking and drinking, or the one watching the consequences. It leaves a mark with each breath, sip, injection. I think the video amplifies the message of the song really effectively.

  10. Look of people want to smoke let them. I smoke on parties too and Im not addicted. Some people like it some dont but it dont taste that bad 😂

  11. It's amazing that she is addressing such an important issue! I would never imagine that someone so young can be so rational, conscious and wise. Well done

  12. When she said that she was trying to make the song sound like how breathing in recycled breath feels I was like “Wtf it totally does sound like that”

  13. love when artists touch on irresponsable drug use! But let‘s not forget that, responsible drug use does exist and nobldy should be shamed for what they want to put into their body xx

  14. Okay so everyone knows that Billie dressed differently in this video at first I was like “she looks like a Karen/mom” and I was like maybe that’s the point. She feels like the mom of the group just bc she doesn’t do drugs. Then someone else said she dressed like a cigarette (I know I laughed really hard too) and I was like maybe that’s it but I kinda feel like it isn’t. Or maybe that’s just how she wanted to dress??😂💞
No matter what she looks beautiful.

  15. seriously !! Why am I always making sad faces when Billie said this “waking up at sundown” that just breaking my heart a little bit !!

  16. Finally a song l can relate to. I don't like smoking or smoke. I don't think drugs are glamorous. I barely drink. I like hanging out and talking to sober people. Playing board games. Singing along to songs and making up the lyrics even though we can check them up on Google. I like all the things l'm told are old and boring. I don't freaking want a Xanny to feel better.

  17. I can't stand ANY artist who writes music that puts themselves and their own lifestyles on a pedestal, belittling and judging people who are/have been in a lot of pain. sure billie you got your brother and parents and they all treat you well…but what about those that didn't have that same luxury? she's trash.

  18. Same! I fricken hate cigerets! My dad finishes atleash 2 packs a day. Two years ago it was worst! He can finish up to 5-10.. No joke.
